Our Curriculum Intent
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."
Benjamin Franklin
Vision
Our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare our children for lifelong learning. At Canklow Woods Primary, we offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all learners. Through our curriculum, we develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which are the building blocks for later life. Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide. Our aim is to enrich every child's school experience by creating an environment where they are encouraged to succeed and be the best they can be. At Canklow Woods Primary, cultural capital prepares children with the essential knowledge and skills for their future. The exploration of new skills and experiences help to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity.
The National Curriculum
As part of White Woods Primary Academy Trust we follow the National curriculum. Each of our subjects is built upon the purpose, aims and subject content outlined in the national curriculum.
Key Concepts
Key concepts run through curriculum subjects. These concepts have been selected based on National Curriculum guidance as well as research including subject associations, research review series and other academic reviews
Planning
Our long term plans, which can be viewed on each curriculum page outline the areas of study for each curriculum subject across school. . This gives a picture of what is taught and how this is built upon throughout children’s school journey.
Our medium term plans outline the content of each area of study. This content is organised into clear sequences within lessons and across a series of lessons building progressively. In each medium term plan, leaders detail the content from previously taught lessons that must be retrieved and then built upon.
The content of these medium term plans is carefully labelled to inform teachers about which key concepts the knowledge relates to, what children have been previously taught and need to know and how the content should be sequenced.
Teachers short term planning develops a clear roadmap for lessons sequenced and progressive within their curriculum area. Using the school’s lesson cycle they then craft lessons which build upon children’s prior knowledge, strengthen their knowledge and understanding of key concepts, challenge misconceptions and introduce new content in manageable ways to avoid cognitive overload.
